Luxembourg residence permit: how to bring your pet to Luxembourg?

If you are moving to Luxembourg, you will probably want your pet to accompany you. This should not be complicated if you have all necessary information. In general, most countries have set up a series of regulations and formalities regarding pet import. Hence, it is best to be aware of these before proceeding. Note that these apply to dogs, cats and ferrets, as well as other species such as birds, fish, rodents, etc. Details are available on the Veterinary Service Administration website.

Pets coming from Non-European Union countries
To be authorized to enter Luxembourg, your pet must either wear an identification microchip or a tattoo. They must also be vaccinated against rabies (including first vaccine and boosters) at least 30 days before the scheduled travel date. Note that the vaccination must be carried out in a laboratory that has been approved by the European Union.

Pets must also have an original veterinary health certificate issued in their home country. This certificate must include the proof of rabies vaccination, as well as reports of the blood test carried out to verify the vaccine's effectiveness, especially if it is coming back to the European Union from a third country.

 Important:
Failure to produce any of these documents will automatically conduct your pet to quarantine on its arrival in the country.

In the case of a bird, it must have a health certificate, as well as its owner or representative's statement. It will also have to meet the following conditions: isolation for 30 days before departure, isolation for 30 days in an approved quarantine center on its arrival in Luxembourg, vaccination against avian influenza at least 60 days prior to its import, PCR research on H5N1 virus with negative results and its isolation before import.

Good to know:
These requirements do not apply to birds coming from Andorra, Croatia, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Martin, Switzerland and the Vatican.

Pets coming from European Union countries
To be authorized to travel with you to Luxembourg from a European Union country, your pet has to:
be more than three months old
wear an identification microchip
be vaccinated against rabies (as per the vaccine's manufacturer ' the first vaccine is valid for 21 days upon completion of the vaccination protocol)
a pet passport (containing your pet's identification details and vaccination details).
In the case of less than three months old pets that have not been vaccinated against rabies, they must be accompanied by a statement issued by the owner. This statement should confirm that it has not been in contact with other rabies-infected animals and that it has not stayed anywhere else from its birth date, or that it is accompanied by its mother.

Good to know:
In the case of domestic rodents and rabbits, cage birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and ornamental tropical fish coming from a European Union country, they must have a health certificate certifying that they do not show any clinical signs of disease. This health certificate must be issued by a licensed veterinarian 48 hours before the scheduled departure date.

Quota
An owner is allowed to travel with a maximum of five pets. In this case, the pets must have their identification and all other relevant documents on their arrival in the country. If the owner is importing more than five pets, they will be controlled by the veterinary service at a border inspection post.

Pet identification and registration
All pets in Luxembourg are required to wear an identification microchip. This microchip has to be implanted by a licensed veterinarian at the owner's costs. In the case of cats and ferrets, the identification microchip is also required, but the tattoo remains valid provided it is clearly legible. This condition applies to all trips made within the European Union.
Once in the country, dog owners are required to register their pet at the nearest municipality to their place of residence. If you are moving to a new place of residence, you will have to register once again.
