Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta , is a Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. With a population of about 475,000 over an area of 316 km2, Malta is the world's tenth smallest and fifth most densely populated country. Its capital is Valletta. The official languages are Maltese and English. Malta is a popular tourist destination with its warm climate, numerous recreational areas, and architectural and historical monuments.

Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean(in its eastern basin), some 80 km southern Italy across the Malta Channel.

Malta has a Mediterranean climate , with mild winters and hot summers, hotter in the inland areas. Rain occurs mainly in autumn and winter,  with summer being generally dry.

Malta is classified as an advanced economy together with 32 other countries according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Malta does not have a property tax. 

The state and the Churchprovide education free of charge. Education in Malta is based on the British model. Maltese and English are both used to teach pupils at primary and secondary school level, and both languages are also compulsory subjects.

Today, Malta has both a public health care system, known as the government health care service, where health care is free at the point of delivery, and a private healthcaresystem. Malta has a strong general practitioner-delivered primary care base and the public hospitals provide secondary and tertiary care. The Maltese Ministry of Health advises foreign residents to take out private medical insurance.
